Journalism program promotes screening of the documentary “Reports of a War Correspondent in the Amazon”

The Unaerp Journalism program, in partnership with Agência Repórter Brasil, promoted the screening of the documentary “Reports of a War Correspondent in the Amazon”, a tribute to the English journalist Dom Phillips, murdered in June 2022 in an ambush in Vale do Javari, with indigenous Bruno Pereira.

Lasting around an hour, the feature film shown at the Bassano Vaccarini Theater in a commented session with Marcel Gomes, Executive Secretary and responsible for the research area at Repórter Brasil, is a dive into the challenges faced by reporters who cover violence against indigenous communities in the Amazon.

The film was shown at the Bassano Vaccarini Theater in a commented session and had the participation of Marcel Gomes, from Agência Repórter Brasil.

Teacher Geraldo José Santiago, coordinator of the Journalism program, highlighted that the documentary screening is an incentive for students. “It is also time to realize what is happening in our country and reflect on everything we are experiencing in Brazil, in the Amazon, its preservation and the people who are willing to protect this environment”.

Furthermore, professor Santiago stated that the event was a complement to one of the differences of the bachelor's degree which, in addition to television journalism, has a subject focused on documentary journalism, in which students develop an audiovisual production.

The event was attended by Marcel Gomes, Executive Secretary and responsible for the research area at Repórter Brasil.

Executive Secretary and responsible for the research area at Repórter Brasil, Marcel Gomes detailed the creation of the audiovisual production. “A documentary is a journalistic product that takes time to make and depends on several professionals, in the production, travel, field, camera and post-production areas. So, it is a work that takes at least a year to complete and deliver. We started producing right after the tragedy happened, which confirmed that these two people had been murdered there in Vale do Javari, in Amazonas.”

Repórter Brasil journalist, France Júnior, an alumnus of the Journalism program, states that bringing the documentary to Unaerp is important to “show future professionals what the work of reporters in the Amazon is like”, he highlights.
