Research aims to develop a biopharmaceutical for the treatment of depression
The article titled "Challenges in Recombinant Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Production," authored by researchers from the Graduate Program in Biotechnology at Unaerp - Mozart Marins, Rene Beleboni, Ana Lúcia Fachin, and post-doctoral fellow Ellen Rodrigues - has been featured in Trends in Biotechnology, a multidisciplinary journal with an impact factor of 21, published by Cell Press.
The publication provides a review of strategies in laboratory and industrial production of a biopharmaceutical derived from the protein BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), aimed at assisting in the treatment of depression. Professor Beleboni explains, "Our idea is to highlight the challenges of producing this asset in bacteria, presenting the key considerations for successful production of the new biopharmaceutical. Bacteria represent an interesting route for producing this asset, but we need to overcome a series of challenges to truly convert it into a protein produced in high quantities, correctly from a biochemical standpoint, and that functions as a potential medication for the disease."
The researcher further emphasizes the significance of publication in Trends in Biotechnology, a journal that aims to review the primary challenges in the production of biopharmaceuticals and recombinant proteins that may be useful in treating diseases. "Publishing in high-impact and internationally renowned journals demonstrates the quality of research conducted at Unaerp, especially in the Biotechnology Unit. This underscores the relevance of the work, funded by Fapesp and linked to two post-doctoral scholarships, that we carry out at the institution."
Professor Mozart de Azevedo Marins, coordinator of the Graduate Program in Biotechnology, highlights that dissemination in scientific journals with high impact factors demonstrates recognition of the studies conducted by researchers at the Biotechnology Unit and the Graduate Program. "This also attracts the attention of international groups to establish collaborations with the institution, greatly enhancing its visibility and recognition among national and international bodies," he adds.
