Professor Dr. Artur Teixeira Pereira, who teaches in the Nursing and Physical Education programs at Unaerp Guarujá, has recently gained significant recognition with the publication of his article "Repositioning pinacidil and its anticonvulsant and anxiolytic properties in murine models" in the prestigious Scientific Reports, part of the Nature group—one of the most respected scientific journal groups in the world, which has served the academic community with discoveries that advance knowledge and address society's greatest challenges since 1869.
The article, titled in Portuguese "Reposicionando o pinacidil e suas propriedades anticonvulsivantes e ansiolíticas em modelos murinos," explores a new use for pinacidil, which was initially developed for blood pressure control. "Currently, many medications used for epilepsy and anxiety have side effects such as drowsiness and motor difficulties that affect patients' daily lives. Our research demonstrated that, at the tested dosage, pinacidil shows positive effects without these problems, opening new therapeutic possibilities," explains Artur.
The project also involved collaboration with Dr. Érica Aparecida Gelfuso, a former Biotechnology student at Unaerp Ribeirão Preto, and was guided by Professor Dr. Rene Oliveira Beleboni. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Unaerp's campuses, stating, "It is the University itself improving. We collaborated on a paper of the highest relevance, highlighting the involvement of both campuses in developing an innovative study."
Artur expressed great pride in the publication. "Having my work recognized in a globally renowned journal like Scientific Reports is a source of immense pride. Knowing that our research can provide more effective treatments with fewer side effects is one of the greatest achievements of my career."
The recognition of Professor Artur's work by Scientific Reports, along with the collaboration of Dr. Érica Aparecida Gelfuso and Professor Dr. Rene Oliveira Beleboni, reinforces Unaerp's commitment to academic and scientific excellence, uniting the campuses of Ribeirão Preto and Guarujá in research of global relevance.
