Unaerp Professor and Researcher Appointed Full Member of Prestigious Sigma Xi

Professor André Pitondo da Silva, researcher in Microbiology and faculty member in the Graduate Programs in Biotechnology, Dentistry, and Environmental Technology, as well as in the undergraduate programs in Dentistry and Physiotherapy at Unaerp, has been appointed as a Full Member of Sigma Xi, one of the world's most prestigious scientific honor societies. This recognition is awarded to researchers who have made significant contributions to science and society across various scientific fields.

Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi has historically played a crucial role in promoting and advancing scientific research. Its membership includes over 200 Nobel Prize winners, such as Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, Linus Pauling, Francis Crick, James Watson, Barbara McClintock, John Goodenough, and Jennifer Doudna.

Professor Pitondo-Silva's work in Microbiology spans medical, oral, environmental microbiology, and biotechnology, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and bacterial pathogenicity. The integration of these areas aligns with the interdisciplinary One Health approach, promoting interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health. His research has significantly contributed to scientific knowledge, benefiting society and fostering the development of new researchers.

For the researcher, receiving recognition from such a respected organization in the scientific community is a tremendous honor and validates years of dedication to research and teaching. "Sigma Xi represents scientific excellence, and being part of this select group is both a responsibility and an encouragement to continue contributing to science and shaping future scientists. I received my appointment with surprise, and I believe many other Brazilian researchers, including colleagues from Unaerp, also deserve to join Sigma Xi," he emphasized.

This achievement symbolizes international recognition of his dedication to science. The professor attributes the diversity of his research lines in microbiology, along with the importance of antimicrobial resistance and the rise of the One Health concept post-COVID-19 pandemic, as contributing factors to his nomination.

"This merit is not solely the result of my work but also of my entire team, who enthusiastically collaborates on various scientific projects. This recognition reflects the partnerships built throughout my career, which have been crucial to the success of our research. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the continuous support from the University over the years. Undoubtedly, institutional support has been essential in fostering my academic and professional growth," Pitondo-Silva stated.

Mozart de Azevedo Marins, Coordinator of Unaerp Graduate Programs, highlights that Professor Pitondo's appointment as a Full Member of Sigma Xi underscores the quality of Unaerp's faculty, setting a benchmark for students' careers to aspire to. "This demonstrates the excellence of our faculty, providing students with knowledge transfer and experiences from these professionals. I believe this places the professor in the spotlight as an icon that students can aim to achieve professionally."

Furthermore, Professor Marins emphasizes that "the professor's nomination to this society shows that research at Unaerp is of international excellence and recognition."

The appointment also enhances Unaerp's prestige and excellence in the global scientific arena, according to the researcher. "This recognition reflects the quality of research and education offered by our University, which has reached its centennial, reaffirming its commitment to academic and scientific excellence."
